Cath lab

Purchasing a pre-owned cath lab is a cost-effective solution compared to purchasing a brand-new system. However, when searching for a new, used cath lab, there are some key points you need to ask yourself to find the right fit.

Floor or ceiling-mounted system?

First, it is important to consider the mounting of the system. Do you currently have a cath lab in operation and is it ceiling-mounted or floor-mounted? Firstly, if you do not already have a cath lab in operation, it is important that you bear in mind that a ceiling-mounted system typically needs more preparations than a floor-mounted system.

What kind of procedures do you perform/intend to perform?

If you are performing runoff procedures, or you are intending to do so, this will impact how many monitors you will need as well as which detector size to go for. Typically, 20 cm cath lab detectors are preferred for neurological procedures as well as cardiac studies. The 30 cm detectors can perform both vascular and cardiac studies. But if you intend to use the cath lab to perform angiographic procedures, the detector size is preferably 40 cm.

Whether to choose a single-plane or a bi-plane system

Overall, single-plane cath labs are the most common, but a bi-plane, with its dual x-ray source and dual detector, opens for more procedures. Biplane cath labs acquire 3D images faster than a single-plane and they also come with 3D software as a standard.

The type of procedures that you plan to use your cath lab for should be considered when deciding between a bi-plane or a single-plane as the two types are designed with certain specialties in mind.

If you work mostly with general surgeries such as stents or balloons a single-plane lab could be a good solution. However, if you are mostly performing Neurovascular studies a bi-plane is the better fit.
